It’s emerged that a man arrested on suspicion of murdering missing York chef Claudia Lawrence is a former resident of Harrogate.
Charity worker Michael Snelling was arrested by police investigating the disappearance of the 35-year-old who was last seen five years ago.
He was released on police bail last Wednesday after more than a day of questioning, but forensics officers continued searching his house in York, as well as his mother’s house on Tyneside, until yesterday.
It’s now been reported that the 59-year-old, born and brought up in North Tyneside, lived in Harrogate for a number of years before moving to York.
Neighbours said he worked for some time as a lab technician in the biology department at the University of York but had recently started work for a mental health charity.
Claudia Lawrence, who worked as a chef at the same university, was reported missing by her father Peter on March 20, 2009.
North Yorkshire Police launched a review of the investigation last year after a new major crime unit was established in Harrogate by the force.
