A Ripon shop worker was forced into a back room while thieves took more than £1,000 worth of electrical goods in a terrifying daytime raid.
Three men attacked Motor World on Westgate at around 11am on Tuesday, December 6, forcing the frightened man into the back room and locking the shop before emptying the till, smashing display cabinets and stealing stock including sat-nav systems and stereos.
The 26-year-old worker, thought to be the shop manager, was the only person in the store at the time and needed hospital treatment after the ordeal.
Assistant manager Sarah Burston said at the time the robbers struck there would normally have been two staff at work in the shop.
“I’m usually there on Tuesdays as well. On the one hand I’m glad I wasn’t here when it happened, but on the other hand if there had been two of us maybe they wouldn’t have tried anything, or we could have raised the alarm quicker or had each other’s backs.”
The shop stayed closed for the rest of Tuesday but opened again as normal on Wednesday.
“I am a little bit nervous about being here on my own now,” Sarah said.
“But Ripon being the place it is there have been lots of people stopping me in the street and popping into the shop to ask if we are alright.”
Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward to help in their hunt for the three men.
Det Sgt Paul Schofield, of Harrogate CID, said: “This robbery has naturally left the man who was working in the store shaken by the experience. Thankfully his injuries are not serious.
“I am appealing to anyone who may have seen the three men making their way along Westgate to contact the police or Crimestoppers immediately.”
The three men left Motor World, turned right and ran down Westgate and police believe they will have been carrying a box.
They got into a silver car parked near the Black Swan pub and were driven away, DS Schofield said.
“This is very unusual for Ripon, for the time of day, and for the type of premises. And with the stock that has been stolen – sat-navs and stereos – we are appealing for anyone who has been offered these things for sale to come forward.”
The three men are all described by police as approximately 5ft 8in tall and aged in their mid- to late-20s.
Two of the men have slim builds, and the third is described as very skinny.
Anyone who can help the police with their enquiries can contact DS Paul Schofield at Harrogate CID on 0845 6060247 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111, quoting reference number 12110205614.
A 22-year-old woman has been arrested and bailed in connection with the incident.
