When Dave Scorfield and Scott Fletcher noticed there were no tool hire outlets in Wetherby, they decided to set up their own.
And spotting this gap in the market has paid dividends for the duo, who last week celebrated their company’s second birthday by moving to bigger premises.
Wetherby Tool Hire was launched two years ago and turnover has already doubled from the first year to the second.
“A lot of people we spoke to were driving to Leeds, York or Harrogate to hire tools,” said Scott.
“Wetherby didn’t have a tool hire shop at all, and we are still the only one in the town. We literally spotted a gap in the market.”
When they launched Wetherby Tool hire, the pair were already running their own building and landscaping company, Fletchfield Services, which they set up nine years ago. The two businesses now operate alongside each other from the same premises in Sandbeck Park, Wetherby.
Last month, Scott and Dave, both 33, relocated the businesses to a much larger unit on the same business park, enabling them to develop the services offered by Wetherby Tool Hire.
“The business is going well and we now have a lot more stock. We have a new power tool, accessories and machinery shop. We have an increased hire fleet with more new machinery, and a new plant department with mini diggers, micro diggers, dumpers and rollers. We are stockists of DeWalt and Makita power tools.
“Our service and repair department has also increased in size. We do a lot of repairs on lawnmowers and power tools.”
Scott said about 70 per cent of their customers were tradespeople, with the most hired tools being cement mixers, sanders and wacker plates, as well as turf cutters, rotivators and stump grinders.
“The tool hire business has got stronger and stronger as time’s gone on,” added Scott.
“Now we’re just looking to get more stock, more diggers and just build it up.”
