Elsewhere, the Yorkshire Ambulance Service has reassured residents it will do all it can to keep disruption to a minimum.

It anticipates its services will be reduced between 6am and 6pm, with disruption to services also expected outside those hours.

A spokesman urged people to call 999 only in a life-threatening or serious situation and said doctors and senior clinicians would be on hand to carry out additional clinical triage. Patient transport services are also being scaled back and will only run for those with essential appointments.

Patients are urged to check with their hospital or clinic before travelling to make sure their appointment is going ahead.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service estimates less than one per cent of its staff will be on strike tomorrow.

A spokesman said frontline services would not be affected.
