Friends and colleagues from across the Harrogate district went head-to-head in an Apprentice-style charity challenge to collectively raise nearly £34,000 for Saint Michael’s Hospice.

The Academy Health Club, The Alexandra, Baroque Hair Salon, Bluebird Care, Caffé Nero, CCF Accountancy, CNG Ltd, Hornbeam Park Developments Ltd, The Manhattan Club, One Stop Shop and Purple Violets spent a month turning a £100 investment loan into as much money as possible for Saint Michael’s Hospice, as part of the charity’s You’re Inspired challenge.

Utilising their entrepreneurial skills the teams turned hundreds of pounds into thousands by selling cheeky calendars, organising car washes, climbing mountains, baking and selling cupcakes, painting faces, breaking darts tournament records, cycling the distance of the Tour de France and arranging silent auctions and raffles.

The Chief Executive of Saint Michael’s, Tony Collins said: “We can’t thank everyone enough who took part in You’re Inspired 2013.

“Every team brought a real buzz and excitement to the event and in total raised £33, 393- a phenomenal amount which will go towards providing free care and support for local people living with life-shortening illness and their families.”

The challenge, sponsored by Berwins solicitors, culminated in an awards evening at the Crown Hotel, Harrogate,

where the teams battled it out to impress a panel of business heavyweights, including Founder of Forward Ladies, Etta Cohen, Senior Partner at the Howard Matthews Partnership, Howard Matthews, Chairman of Vida Healthcare, Chris Rycroft and Managing Director of Berwins, Sarah Smith.

Taking the winners title this year was natural gas supplier CNG, with runners up The Academy Health Club not far behind.

Most enterprising and entertaining team was won by The Manhattan Club and the individual innovation award went to Gina Edwards, from the One Stop Shop team, who created a re-usable shopping bag with a hand painted view of Crimple Viaduct.

Tony said: “I know the judges were impressed with every team’s efforts as they all put their heart and soul into the challenge and really embraced the fundraising.

“Each year this event just becomes more and more popular and we look forward to welcoming new and established teams back for 2014.”
