Passengers travelling through busy railway stations at Harrogate, Ilkley and York have helped contribute vital funds to national children’s charity Action for Children.

Collectors raised more than £250 at the beginning of March and added to a total of £1,139.77 gathered at train stations around Yorkshire.

Action for Children supports and speaks out for the UK’s most vulnerable, disadvantaged and neglected children and young people.

Drew Haley, client and stakeholder manager for Northern Rail, which manages Harrogate and Ilkley stations, said: “It was fantastic to be able to add to the Yorkshire fundraising total for Action for Children. We’re pleased passengers passing through the stations were able to dig deep and donate for a very worthy cause.”

The charity has also welcomed the railway fundrisers’ efforts.

Vicky Thaxter from Action for Children said: “We want to say a massive ‘thank you’ to everyone across Yorkshire who gave so generously during our rail takeover day and to Northern Rail for kindly allowing us to collect at its stations.

“This was a unique event for us, and the funds raised will make a real difference to our work with neglected and vulnerable children.”

Action for Children collected at Harrogate, Ilkley, York, Scarborough and Dewsbury stations.

Action for Children was founded in 1869, and now runs services included adoption and fostering, family support services and specialist schools. It also campaigns on issues like child neglect and abuse.
