Public meeting to discuss Auction Mart
Residents can have their say on major housing development plans for a historic Ripon site.
Developers Newby Management are to hold a public meeting at the Ripon Spa Hotel on Thursday, January 26 from 7-9pm, to give city residents chance to find out more about plans for the site and have their views heard by developers and engineers.
Coun Stuart Martin is ward councillor for the site and homes on the surrouding streets including Magdalen’s Road.
He said: “This is an open meeting for anyone with an interest in the development, either good or bad, and we would still like to hear from people.”
The company plans to build 96 homes on the former auction mart site and the disused Station Inn, as well as a neighbouring field known as Magdalen’s Hill.
Ripon City Council is to give another chance for residents to speak their mind on the proposals.
The auction mart plans are due for consideration at a meeting in the Town Hall on Monday, January 30 at 7pm, along with a plans for new sports facilities and a wooden gazebo at Moorside Junior School on Harrogate Road.
Residents can speak to the councillors for three minutes before the city council passes its views on to Harrogate Borough Council planners.
Homeowners on nearby Magdalen’s Road have already spoken out about the proposals.
They said they are worried new houses will block the protected historic view from the area towards the cathedral and will surround the listed Magdalen’s Chapel.
But developer Nick Moody defended the plans, saying the site desperately needs development after laying derelict for 17 years and had been earmarked for new housing by the borough council for many years.
