Harrogate’s conference trade brings £50m to the town but, politicians have warned, the multi-million business needs drastic action to bring it into the 21st century and secure its future.
However, campaigners are calling for the centre to be run as an independent company so it can compete in an ever-changing economy.
An independent board of directors running the centre would be able to manage it like any other business – borrowing to reinvest in the facilities – Harrogate councillor Jim Clark said.
