Ambitious new plans have been revealed to build a £1.5m Starbucks drive-thru on Wetherby Road.
The coffee giant has revealed this week it has submitted plans to transform the site of a former dental laboratory.
It would build a drive-thru near to the junction with Hookstone Drive, it said, working in partnership with a group called Euro Garages.
“We know that our customers expect the best possible coffee wherever they are and the success of our drive-thru and motorway stores show that this is a big opportunity,” a Starbucks spokesman said.
“We are proud of our partnership with Euro Garages that is bringing great coffee and exciting employment opportunities in communities across the UK, including in Harrogate.”
Starbucks initially said the new store was due to open in May and would create around 15 new jobs.
It then emerged that planning permission for the site, which would see a change of use from a dental laboratory to a retail unit, is awaiting approval from Harrogate Borough Council.
A spokesman for Euro Garages, speaking to the Advertiser this week, said: “We seek to invest more than £1.5m to redevelop our Wetherby Road site and surrounding area with a view to building a Starbucks Drive-Thru.
“As part of the Government’s drive to encourage inward commercial investment to be at the forefront of local authority planning consideration, Euro Garages is keen to enter an effective dialogue with the council about the proposals.
“We believe the development would be a positive addition to the community, offering economic regeneration benefits and more importantly creating 20 plus new local jobs.”
The new drive-thru would be built close to the Wetherby Road junction with Hookstone Road, next to the pub.
Starbucks’ plans have been met with a mixed reaction on Twitter.
Graham Hyde said: “We should be encouraging local businesses and independent coffee shops of which there are lots in town.”
Irene Zdziebko said: “It’s a great idea - except that Wetherby Road is congested enough without an added attraction.”
Alison Price said it would be good if it came with a Krispy Kreme donuts, while Daniel Crann said: “Definitely a crime. What next - a Dominos drive through?!”
