Affordable fitness chain Pure Gym, which is based at Grewelthorpe and operates 42 gyms nationwide, is to open a new 17,000 sq ft facility in the Travelodge development on Tower Street in Harrogate.

Leeds-based developer Gregory Projects has already secured planning and conservation approvals to redevelop the former bowling alley site, and the 70-bed Travelodge and Pure Gym deals mean the scheme is now fully let.

Redevelopment works are due to start in June.

Richard Tovey of Gregory Projects said: “The fact that we have attracted two prime operators in such a short space of time clearly demonstrates the need for such facilities in Harrogate town centre.

“There is no other low-cost gym operating in the area and Travelodge is expanding its bed space based on demand.”

Pure Gym’s low-cost concept, which includes a ‘price for life’, 24-hour opening, no contract and high-quality gym equipment, has seen it become the fastest-growing gym chain in the UK.

Pure Gym property director Angela Crawshaw said: “Pure Gym is excited to be bringing low-cost fitness to Harrogate.

“This is a great opportunity to prove to people that 24/7 access to a high-quality gym doesn’t have to cost a fortune.”
