The Harwood Pub in Pannal has closed amid speculation that another convenience supermarket will take its place.
In March the Harrogate Advertiser investigated a planning loophole allowing supermarket giants to convert local pubs into small supermarket.
The Harrow on Knaresborough Road has recently been converted to an M-local and Tesco have confirmed their plans for The Skipton Pub on Skipton Road, though it is currently still trading.
Greene King refused to confirm plans to sell off the pub when asked by the ‘Advertiser in March, however have now said: “After an extensive review of the business, we made the difficult decision that the Harwood no longer fits within our core estate and have now sold the pub.”
Pannal resident Renee Dickinson said: “We locals do want a pub, one that serves food and is a welcoming place to go and have a drink and something to eat.
“We have heard rumours that the place is going to be turned into a small shop, which we don’t want and don’t believe we need. We have a good Post Office that also supplies fresh produce and other items and plus the main garage on Leeds Road is a small Spa shop.”
“The pub is an integral part of Pannal and we want to keep it running.”
