What do Mourning rings, an impressive Victorian mahogany tester bed and a full-size, tin suit of armour all have in common?
They were all among the top lots of the wide-ranging Country House Sale, held on Saturday 8 September, at the Auction centre, Leyburn. The sale, which included 1,250 lots from two main country estates and other private vendors from across the UK, reached a total hammer price of £250,000; a fantastic total for this un-catalogued sale.
Jewellery, decorative and collectors’ pieces, quantities of books, pictures, prints and general interiors items were all up for auction. Buyers were excited by the variation of unseen items from sleepy cellars and attics but the many high hammer prices proved that the Country House sale was also a huge success for the sellers. Stylish interior pieces, especially those of small proportion sold well; a George IV rosewood writing table in the manner of Gillows made £1,500, a small 19th century oak dresser made £1,100 and a pair of late 17th century walnut and cane seated open armchairs also made £1,100. The exception to this rule, the tester bed which made £1,300 and another late Victorian double bed with good quality mattress that made £2,500.
The top lot of the sale caused great excitement on the day as six telephone lines and a number of room bidders, including a top London interior designer, went head to head for lot 925. The early 19th century wool work picture of a tiger (82cm by 105cm), in its tired frame had been the talking point of the two day view. Some people loved it, some people were indifferent to it but the tiger which divided the room eventually sold for £8000.
The Country house sales are proving hugely popular by including a tempting selection of fine art and antique collectables that are fresh to the market.
