A RIPON pub has been named “Best Cask Beer Pub 2011” in Yorkshire and the North East.
The One Eyed Rat on Allhallowgate has won the title at The Great British Pub Awards - the Oscars of the pub world.
“We are really pleased to win,” said landlady Ruth Hamby, who runs the pub with husband David.
“We won a similar award for our outdoor area a few years ago, but it was the cask ale prize we really wanted so we we did all sorts of work to get it.
“We were on holiday when the winners were announced but came home to find a letter telling us we’d won.”
David and Ruth went through a gruelling judging process with entry forms, interviews, and visits from independent judges before coming out on top in the awards, organised by industry magazine the Publican’s Morning Advertiser.
Editor Paul Charity said: “One Eyed Rat has a fantastic offer for its customers and is a worthy winner.”
The pub will now go forward to the national finals, at the Hilton Hotel in London’s Park Lane on September 8, and will go head to head with five other regional winners for the UK title of Best Cask Beer Pub.
