Knaresborough’s largest retail construction project is about to be completed, enabling the opening of the town’s “greenest” store.

The 35,000 sq ft Barker and Stonehouse outlet next to St James Retail Park has taken six months and £4 million to build and will open for business on Boxing Day.

The Middlesbrough-based company is the UK’s largest independent family-run furniture retailer and has stores in Leeds, Nottingham and across the North East

Managing director James Barker said the project had only been possible because of the backing it had received from the area.

He said: “The support we have had locally for this project has been fantastic, and this investment is a symbol of our commitment to Knaresborough.”

“Using local companies and locally-sourced products means this store really was ‘made in Yorkshire’ and we are incredibly proud of the result.

“Knaresborough Council and Harrogate District Council have been outstanding in helping us achieve our goals. Their attitude, at every stage in the development, has been really positive.”

The new building has been built to high environmental standards and features a meadow roof, natural ventilation, low-energy heating, a heat recovery system and a unique lighting system specially designed by the company.
