Birstwith CE School News: we will not be holding our usual Merit Assembly on Friday, December 7. Instead, to start our Christmas festivities and celebrations, we would like to invite you to join us at 2.30pm on that Friday to sing carols round our Christmas tree and share mince pies and coffee / tea. We will be delighted to see all those who are able to come. We would like to express our appreciation to Mr Martin Wood for his kind donation of the tree. With regard to our use of transport facilities, we have, again, very much appreciated the generosity and flexibility given to us by Mrs Merriman at Belmont Grosvenor School when she has made available the use of a driver and minibus. This wonderful provision has been regularly used in moving children between both Birstwith and Bishop Thornton Schools when they have had opportunity to experience the “other school’s” facilities and resources. Without Mrs Merriman’s kindness it would have proved far more difficult, if not impractical. Our youngest children’s Christmas Nativity rehearsal will be held in church at 1pm on Wednesday, December 12, to which we would like to extend a warm invitation to all our families with pre-school children. This will be followed by their Nativity “proper” on Thursday, December 13 at 2pm in church. On Monday, December 10 we will be having our oldest children’s afternoon production of Five Gold Rings in church at 2pm which will be followed by their evening performance at 6.30pm on Wednesday, December 12 again in church. We very much appreciate the opportunity of using our lovely church for these occasions. Our final Merit Assembly of term will take place on Friday, December 14 at 2.50pm. The oldest children in school - and the staff - are pleased to, again, be given the opportunity of providing singing entertainment to the members of Birstwith Luncheon Club on Tuesday, December 11 at 2pm. This is an occasion which has been much enjoyed by the children in previous years who appreciate the contact with some of the more senior members of our community. The children, staff and governors always enjoy and look forward to their traditional Christmas lunch which, this year, will be on Wednesday, December 19. Our appreciation and thanks to our fabulous cook, Charlotte! On Thursday, December 20 the children will have their Christmas parties and will be visited by “our own” Father Christmas! The school term finishes the following day Friday, December 21 at 2pm (there will be no Time Out Club on that day). We re-open on Tuesday, January 8, 2013. Monday, January 7 being a staff training day. We are sorry to say goodbye to our Class 1 teachers, Mrs Amey and Mrs Lauber, who will be leaving us at the end of the term - we give them our warmest wishes for the future and our grateful thanks for their contributions to the children and school during the last few years. The children and staff in school would like to take the opportunity to convey their best wishes for a peaceful and enjoyable Christmas to all who live in the village. Secretary.
Christingle Service: this will be on Sunday, December 9 at 9.30am in the church and is a service for all ages. It is hoped that a number of children from Birstwith School, together with those from other schools, will be present and, of course, many older people.
Birstwith Christmas Post: a collecting box for your Christmas cards and letters will be in the village shop (thank you once again to Matthew and Andrea) from Monday, December 3 until midday on Thursday, December 20. As usual, mail will be delivered within a half mile radius of Birstwith Post Office, and we suggest a minimum donation of 15p per card or letter. This year the chosen charity is Marie Curie Cancer Care. Would users of this post please remember to print the full postal address on the envelope. John Dawson.
Luncheon Club: the next lunch will be on Tuesday, December 11. As this is the Christmas lunch and we can cater for up to 60 people, please let Brenda (01423 770409), Thelma (01423 770891) or me know if you are unable to attend or if you would like to bring a guest. Single people who do not normally attend would also be particularly welcome, just telephone me any evening. We hope to be entertained by Birstwith school children so please be prepared to stay a little longer than normal. The following lunch will be on Tuesday, January 15, 2013. I’ll take this opportunity at the end of a calendar year to thank everyone who continues to make this a very successful and enjoyable event. Elaine Burge (01423 770274).
Coffee Morning: this will be held in St James’s Church Hall, Birstwith on Wednesday, December 12 from 10-11.30am. There will be coffee/tea, cakes and chat. Please come along and bring a friend!
Poppy Appeal: thank you to everyone who supported the Poppy appeal 2012 in the Birstwith area. The total amount raised to date from house-to-house collections, static collections, the church Remembrance service collection, sale of wreaths and donations is £1,640.29. I would particularly like to thank the house-to-house collectors for their help and hard work. Adrian Dixon (honorary organiser).
