Embroiderer’s Guild: the Nidderdale Branch has just had their first committee meeting after the AGM and organised next year’s programme. They have also appointed their first male chairman, Richard Harker and wish him every success in his new role. The next meeting of the guild will be on Saturday, October 20 in Birstwith Church Hall at 10am with a sewing morning followed by a talk on Patchwork by Maggie Relpl at 2pm. As usual visitors and new members will be most welcome. For further information please contact Mrs Maureen Robinson on 01423 880597 or visit their website at www.embroiderersguild.com.
Operation Christmas Child: our annual Shoebox Collection will be launched at the All Age Worship service on Sunday, October 21 and the boxes collected at the All Age Worship service on Sunday, November 18. If you would like to take part, please collect a leaflet from the back of church, and perhaps one for a friend as well. This gives details of how to prepare and what to put in the shoebox. Louise Garnett is kindly organising our Parish collection again this year.
Birstwith Show 2012: once again BHS is grateful to those people who subscribe to the society and its show day prior to the event. These subscriptions provide a much needed financial foundation for the day itself. These funds would not be available without the dedication of the show subscription collectors who make their rounds during the weeks prior to show day. Thanks go to Geoff Eyes, Amy Holmes, Tony Harris, Heather Robinson, Harry Eastland, David Bird, David Gaunt, Geoffrey Raspin and David Britton. Also thanks for the sales outlets at The Dale Stores and The Station. This year’s collection only amounted to £700. Collection was suspended in view of the possible cancellation. A free show brochure was delivered to all houses in the village. It was another great show despite reduced attendance! We still need a new generation of collectors, so please contact me on 01423 771754. David Britton.
Brass Cleaning: I wish to inform all people on the brass cleaning rota of the proposed changes starting in 2013. Several people have brought to my attention the fact that the brasses only need to be cleaned every other month. I put this proposal to the PCC and it has been agreed upon. This is how I hope it will work - 2013 - January, March, May, July, September and November; 2014 - February, April, June, August, October and December. Each person or persons will do their usual month but every other year! I hope this is acceptable to you all. Please, please let me know if not. The rota will appear in the magazine as usual in case you have a senior moment. Thelma March 01423 770891.
European Concert: the St Paulinus Singers will be performing in St James’s Church on Saturday, October 27 at 7.30pm. This notable choir makes a return visit to Birstwith with a programme entitled European Accord, a wide ranging selection of music from several countries. Their publicity refers to their music ranging from “sacred to secular and serious to smiling ... and the choir’s will charm the audience on an autumn’s evening”. Tickets are £8 each, £5 concessions and free for U18’s. These are available in advance from Jon or on the door. For more information please contact John Mitchell on 01423 770412 or at firstname.lastname@example.org.
