Birstwith CE School News: we are delighted that our oldest children have been offered weekly drumming sessions by one of our pupil’s grandpas as a result of their enthusiasm and enjoyment of his introductory session. Over the years he has led church groups, Boys’ Brigade troupes and created marching bands so has a wealth of expertise to give the children. Our website is in the process of being re-vamped and will soon be adorned with improved artwork - as our neighbours and local community may be aware, we collaborate with Bishop Thornton CE School and there is a link on both schools’ websites which takes you between the two. School was very pleased to be offered a free charge one day per week football provision. We understand this arose as a consequence of our children’s regular and ongoing enthusiastic participation in local sporting activities. They very much look forward to this provision and our appreciation goes to Mrs Vandepeear, our Class 4 teacher, who works with commitment in ensuring the children are offered the experience and benefits of sport activities in Nidderdale and the outlying area. Our oldest children will be sitting their SATs tests week commencing May 13. We are about to undertake one of our last planned capital building projects which will commence during half-term, week beginning May 27. Although of a minor nature the work will entail the creation of an external door in the youngest children’s class storage area which will enable their direct access to their outdoor learning environment. The storage area will become a cloakroom with external ground levelled to create an amphitheatre of shallow steps which may be used, if the sun ever warms us again!, as a reading or play area.Together with Mrs Lacey, the children’s teacher, and the teaching assistants, Mrs Morris, Mrs Johnson and Mrs Gardner we are quite excited at this long-awaited development. The school’s photographer will be taking her annual class and group photos which have, for a number of years, been appreciated by parents in their contemporary style. At the end of the month, the children will be visiting the historical Eden Camp site near Malton which will enrich their Second World War studies. As usual, we warmly invite you to celebrate our merit assemblies with the children which will be held in school at 2.50pm on Friday, May 10, 17, and 24. We hope we may look forward to seeing you then. Secretary.
