Birstwith WI: our December meeting was a really enjoyable Christmas meal at The Station. As always Emma and her team did us proud with a delicious meal and a great party atmosphere. Thank you to all involved. The new year saw us back in the church hall with a fascinating illustrated talk entitled The Brown Plaques of Harrogate by Peter Fargher. It proved to be a most interesting evening taking us back through the glories of former times in Harrogate. Plans were made for various events including a visit to the Marks and Spencer Exhibition in Leeds in March. Our annual jumble sale will take place on March 16 so please save all your cast-offs for us. More information on where to take them next month. Our February meeting is the AGM followed by an auction for charity and the launch of the new programme. Debbie Britton.

Birstwith Play Area: good news! We have secured two more grants for the playground, £2,957 from Harrogate Borough Council and £2,469 from Knabbs Ridge Wind Farm. So we are planning more equipment for this year. We are now just £5,000 short of funding to fully complete the playground. If anyone is aware of any more avenues of funding please let me know. If you would like any more information about the play area or to give a donation please do not hesitate to contact Liz Elvidge on 01423 770866.

Darley Choir: the Singing for Fun choir is an all-age fun group who enjoy singing at Christ Church Community Centre, Darley, at 7.30pm on a Tuesday evening. We always welcome new members, be they guys or girls, so please come along and join us. For more details please contact Issy Henderson on 07944 980044.

Birstwith walks: both walks on Saturday, February 16 will be five - six miles long and start from the village shop. The morning walk will leave the shop at 10am and go via Swincliffe, Rowden, Saltergate Hill and Greystone Plain. On return to the village shop those who wish can purchase food and drinks for a short lunch break on the village green (or in the bus shelter if wet). The afternoon walk will start at 1.30pm and go via Burnt Yates, Broxholme, Hollybank and Hampsthwaite to finish at The Station around 4pm. The walks will be at a pace to suit those taking part. You can do both or only the morning or the afternoon walk. If you bring dogs you must keep them under control. You will need clothing and footwear appropriate to the weather and possibly something to drink and eat along the way. For more details please contact Adrian Dixon on 01423 770116 or 0771 618 7621 or e-mail adrian_dixon@tiscali.co.uk.

Luncheon Club: the next lunch will be on Tuesday, February 12. Please note that this is the second Tuesday instead of the normal third due to half-term holidays. I am afraid that due to school holidays later in the year I may also have to change the dates, but I will try and inform you in good time. I will also try and put a notice in the Birstwith column of the local paper. As usual, please let either Brenda 01423 770409, Thelma 01423 770891 or me know if you are unable to attend. At the January lunch we were pleased to welcome two new members. Several members were absent due to ill health and we hope they will be back fit and well in February. Elaine Burge 01423 770274.
