90 TEAMS will be lining up at the start for this year’s Great Knaresborough Bed Race.
Following a draw by lottery at the Working Men’s Club in Knaresborough, the 90 teams were picked with five reserve places. Most teams sent representatives to the draw and many were asked to select names from the hat and, for the first time, the countries were picked for each team to base their bed decorations on. There was seeding preference in the draw for junior teams and those who have contested recent races. Sponsors’ teams and 2011 winners entered on guaranteed places.
“The aim was to be as fair as we could be given that the number of entrants again well exceeded the amount of places,” said Alan Walgate, Bed Race Chairman from the Knaresborough Lions. “For those teams who entered but were unlucky, their entries will be considered next year as if they had run, thus getting them further seedings points.
“We think the random chosing of countries coming from our 2012 theme of Olympic Nations could prove an extra element of fun with the fancy dress element.”
Now in its 47th year, the Race will be staged on Saturday, June 9. It has become an established part of the town’s calendar of events and pulls in thousands of spectators.
Last year, it is believed that 25,000 people turned up to support the event, giving an important filip to the town’s traders. It is a volunteer event organised by the Lions Club, and in 2011 is thought to have raised £80,000 to £100,000 for charity.
