TWO garage workers who rescued a woman from her burning home have been commended by the fire service.
Graham Chapman, 35, and Steven Byrne, 28, were working at Oatlands Tyre and Motor Company in Mount Street when the fire broke out on Tuesday, August 2.
Hearing shouting from down the street, the pair ran out to help, before crews from North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue arrived a few minutes later.
Harrogate station manager Simon Render said: “They tried to gain entry but couldn’t because of the severity of the fire.
“They got a ladder and helped the lady out of the first floor window.
“We wanted to acknowledge that what they did was excellent so they have been given a commendation from the chief fire officer.
“They were delighted, but they didn’t do it for anything like that - they just wanted to help.
“What they did was very brave, but we would not recommend that people do that. It could have been a very different outcome.”
The woman who lived in the house was rescued without serious injury because she had been in an upstairs bedroom with the door shut, preventing the smoke spreading through the house as much as it would have otherwise.
Mr Render also said it served as a warning about the importance of having a plan for escaping from upstairs if a fire began on the ground floor.
