A bumper crowd for 145th Birstwith Show

A bumper crowd turned out to Saturday’s Birstwith Show, making this year’s event one of the biggest in its 146 year history.

Organisers of the annual event, who are still counting tickets, estimate that turnout to this year’s show may be double that of previous years.

And with money raised on stalls and raffles going straight back to community groups, many are celebrating the success of this traditional village show.

“We had an absolutely amazing day, it was fantastic,” said show secretary Amy Holmes. “The weather was perfect - it stayed dry for us - and it was probably one of the busiest days we’ve ever had.”

Main highlights were a motorcycle display team, a dog show and a beautiful babies competition run by the WI. Birstwith School ran the tea tent, and there were stalls from the church and Horticap, as well as local groups.

There was a Punch and Judy show, displays from a horse and donkey sanctuary and appearances from the Nidderdale Llamas.

Show princess Eve Forster led the parade around the main ring, accompanied by her attendants, Joshua Hanslow and Ben Barker.

Miss Harrogate, Olivia Caven, herself a former Birstwith girl who was once show queen, helped her cut the red ribbon to declare the event officially open.

One visitor, Chris Mawson, hasn’t ever missed a show. Now aged 50, he has been to 50 consecutive shows since the year he was born, and he was given a special mention on the day.

“People love traditional events like the Birstwith Show Day, there’s a real sense of occasion,” said Miss Holmes.

“It was lovely to see such a turnout.”
