THERE’S only one word to describe Rachael Roberts’ fashion collection - shoddy!

But that doesn’t mean it’s bad. Shoddy is the name of a material made from re-used (or “upcycled”) wool fabric, and the young fashion designer is using it to create a catwalk collection.

It will be a key attraction at the Choose2Reuse fashion extravaganza to be held at 7.30pm on January 22 at the Royal Hall, Harrogate.

Organised by the York and North Yorkshire Waste Partnership, its aim is to combine fun and fashion with practical solutions to help people save money and the environment.

The fashion show will be hosted by Dick Strawbridge MBE of Scrap Heap Challenge and Its Not Easy Being Green, and also boasts entertainment by Any Dream Will Do singer, Rob McVeigh, and the North Yorkshire County Youth Dance Company.

Rachael said: “I think that people are becoming more interested in sustainability and events like this one will show how unwanted clothing, either worn straight from a charity shop and redesigned and upcycled into something new, can be as, if not more desirable and fashionable as new high street clothes.

“This show is a great opportunity for me, and my collection is going to be great fun using big chunky knits, knitted bags and scarves.’”

There are two main elements to the show. The first is to show striking collections of clothing and accessories from charity shops straight off the shelf and unaltered. The second is in partnership with students from local colleges and up-and-coming designers to show what creations can be achieved from upcycled and unwanted clothing.

There will also be displays of reusable furniture and stalls at the show where charities, local crafts people and designers who produce items from recycled materials will show and sell their wares.

County Coun Clare Wood, chairman of the waste partnership, said: “Fabulous collections, such as those created by Rachael and many others at this spectacular will ensure that our Choose2Reuse fashion show in Harrogate is an event to remember.

“Fashion creators of all kinds have seized this opportunity as a great chance to show their skills in creating exciting designer items from unwanted materials.

“I would encourage anyone who wants to discover one-off affordable fashions for the New Year to come along to this show.”
