A Grade II listed church at Harlow Hill looks set to be given a new lease of life after sitting empty since July 2009.

All Saints Church on Harlow Hill was built in 1870 and has been in the hands of estate agent GSC Grays for around two and a half years.

Calum Gillhespy, director at GSC Grays, said: “We have been actively marketing the building for around nine months and, hopefully, a sale will go through in the next few weeks.”

Although an unusual building, Mr Gillhespy said GSC Grays deal with the sale around half a dozen church buildings a year.

The sandstone building sits in 0.2 acres of land, the majority of which is dominated by grave stones.

Mr Gillhespy said: “However it is more unusual for a church to be for sale with a grave yard.

“The building comes with its own challenges, when it comes to change of use you need to be sympathetic to the building.”

The church which has appeared on rightmove.co.uk, boasts a bell tower and stained glass windows to the north, south and east of the building, two of which are war memorials.

Mr Gillhespy said: “Unfortunately, the building has been victim of vandalism and some windows smashed but the stained glass ones remain in tact.”

He added: “The building also suffers from dry rot.”

A spokesperson from the Church Commissioners’ Closed Church Division confirmed that the sale of the building looked imminent.

He said: “A local funeral directors has shown interest in the property and a public consultation closed in January looking into the change of use.”

He added: “The building was used as a chapel of ease and was never a parish church.”
