Residents of Harrogate are delighted that the Tour de France route will bring the race through the district not once, but twice.

The route of The Grand Depart, revealed on Thursday (17 January) showed that the worlds greatest cycling race route will visit Harrogate on both days it is in Yorkshire.

Harrogate has been chosen as the final destination of day one of the race, and the first Yellow Jersey of the race will be awarded in the town.

Stage One will begin in Leeds before weaving 190km past Harewood through the Yorkshire Dales before heading into Masham, West Tanfield, Ripon, Ripley and Killinghall before a sprint finish into Harrogate.

Day two will see the race leave York before making its way back to Green Hammerton, Knaresborough, and Starbeck.

Wallace Sampson chief executive of Harrogate Borough Council, who flew to Paris on Thursday morning for the announcement of the Tour de France route, is delighted that the Harrogate district will play host to the race on both days.

He said: “I was hopeful that we would play a part on the first day and I was absolutly delighted when Harrogate was chosen as the finish stage on the day, but even more than that Harrogate has been chosen to play an important part on day two as well.

“Most of the district will have a chance to experience the wonderful iconic event of the tour de france.”

He added: “I really do hope that all of Harrogates residents get out there and cheer on the event.”
