Stray film festival 'too ambitious' for 2013

Harrogate film fans will have to wait to welcome their favourite film stars to the town after organisers of a proposed new Stray Film Festival said they wouldn’t be able to stage it now.

They had claimed a galaxy of famous faces would descend to promote their new films at a show they said would rival European festival stalwarts such as Cannes.

However, organising the event in time has proved “ambitious and tricky”, said PR firm Cicada, which is working with the organiser, businessman Stephen Brown.

Managing director Di Burton told the Harrogate Advertiser: “The Stray Film Festival is not going to happen this year.

“It will take place for the first time in the same week of August 2014.

“To deliver it was going to be a bit ambitious.

“To get it set up in eight months was tricky.”

She suggested the Tour de France as a possible reason for the postponement.

Mrs Burton continued: “Having the Tour de France in Harrogate is a key reason; people in the town are concentrating on that.”

Harrogate will host the opening stages of the premier sporting event in July 2014. In December, the Advertiser reported how Mr Brown had dreamed up the idea of bringing stars to Harrogate.

At the time, he said: “My ambition is to bring Hollywood to Harrogate.

“Harrogate has the right kind of high-quality restaurants, hotels and spas that make it the ideal location for an exclusive film festival.”

Mrs Burton said Cicada hoped it would be working with Mr Brown on the Stray Film Festival project again for the new date they had set for 2014.

Earlier this month, Mr Brown was due to speak at the Harrogate Business Lunch, but was unable to attend.
