Last weekend’s Christmas market was said to be the biggest and best yet with locals and visitors enjoying the festive atmosphere.

Coach loads of visitors from Wigan, Cheshire and Huddersfield joined the hundreds of locals for the annual fair.

Peter Plaws, chairman of Knaresborough Chamber of Trade, said it was the busiest ever: “It was a great success and a record number of people attended.

The market hosted traders from as far away as Portsmouth, and local businesses and charities were well represented.

The Knaresborough Rotary club stand was very busy, Rotarian Sarah Bosomworth said: “Our profits are up this year by about 25 per cent.

Christmas cards depicting a Knaresborugh winter scene by local photographer Charlotte Gale were popular, with the money raised from their sale going to Rotary International’s End Polio campaign.

“A lot of the money raised over the weekend will also go to local charities and local causes,” said Ms Bosomworth.

Hearing Dogs for the Deaf had two stalls and raised over £2,000, fundraiser Brian Russell said: “We were very successful, so many people came down to support us.

“It was nice to finally have an event this year that wasn’t rained off.”

Ferrensby Fireworks Ltd supplied the market’s grand finale with a display against the backdrop of the castle ruins.

Mr Russell said: “A lot of people stayed to watch the fireworks finale and we raised almost £650 bucket shaking.

“It was a great weekend and everyone seemed to really enjoy themselves.”
