Harrogate Theatre's Easter comedy treat
By Graham Chalmers
COMEDY fans are in for an Easter feast of laughs at Harrogate Theatre this year.
From Thursday, April 8 to Friday, April 16, the theatre is to host brand new shows from some of the country's finest comedians such as television's Sean Lock and BBC radio mainstay and panel show favourite Jo Caulfield . Alongside this in the intimate Harrogate Theatre Studio there will be the best in up-and-coming comedy with Edinburgh Festival and Time Out Award nominee Andrew Maxwell and Edinburgh sell-out and YouTube sensation The Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppet Theatre.
Tickets are already high demand with tickets for Sean Lock on Wednesday, April 14 already sold out and tickets selling fast for Jo Caulfield on Thursday , April 8.
Arguably one of the sharpest comic minds on the circuit, Jo Caulfield has established herself as one of the most successful and instantly recognisable female comedians in the country with extensive television and radio credits including Radio 4's critically acclaimed It's That Jo Caulfield Again and regular appearances on Mock The Week (BBC2), Have I Got News For You (BBC1), Never Mind The Buzzcocks (BBC2), Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow (BBC1), Argumental (Dave), and Best of The Comedy Store (Channel 5). In addition, Jo's live shows have repeatedly sold out at the Edinburgh Festival and worldwide. In her new show, Jo picks apart events from the year with her hallmark wicked sense of humour and on-the-nose observational brand of comedy.
Meanwhile the Harrogate Theatre Studio hosts appearances from the emerging stars of comedy perfect for those looking for a more intimate environment to spend an evening with some of the most exciting comic acts on the circuit.
On Saturday, April 10, Irish comic Andrew Maxwell stops off in Harrogate as part of his first UK tour. Renowned for his controversial social commentary and fast paced streams of consciousness and with television credits including most recently Mock the Week (BBC2), Have I Got News for You (BBC1), Argumental (Dave), Celebrity Juice (ITV) and Amnesty International's Secret Policeman's Ball, Andrew is fast becoming more and more popular among both critics and audiences alike and has quickly become a sell-out hit in both UK and Ireland. See him here first at Harrogate Theatre on Saturday 10 April.
And finally the best in alternative comedy on Friday, April 16 with The Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppet Theatre: an hour of songs, sketches and squeaky Scottish silliness from two very cheeky sock puppets as they take on the entire history of cinema, television and film all in one sitting.
Stars of BBC3’s Comedy Shuffle and Upstaged, MTV’s Best Show Ever and the darlings of You Tube, this googly-eyed pair of sock puppets’ new show was nominated for Best Show at the Leicester Comedy Awards 2009 and in addition they have earned vast critical acclaim and enjoyed sell-out shows at the Edinburgh Festival.
The Socks will be supported by alternative magician Ali Cook, whose television credits include Channel Five’s Monkey Magic and Channel 4’s Dirty Tricks and who specialises in anarchic illusions, magic tricks and standup.
All tickets can be booked securely online at www.harrogatetheatre.co.uk or through the Harrogate Theatre Box Office on 01423 502 116.
