Ripon’s St Cecilia Orchestra is launching 2013 with a delightful concert by performing some wonderful audience favourites.

Anyone aspiring to be a concert violinist simply has to have Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in their repertoire as it remains one of the most regularly performed and most loved of all instrumental concertos.

And, ever since its birth, the work has had a rather strange affinity with very young soloists.

Charlotte Scott, who began playing the violin at the age of seven, is the soloist for the concert which takes place at Holy Trinity Church Ripon on Saturday, January, 26 at 7:30pm.

Charlotte won a full scholarship to study in Boston at the New England Conservatory, where she was invited back to take part in the IMI Festival in Maine. Charlotte graduated from the Royal Academy of Music with First Class Honours and won the Franstein Prize for outstanding Final Recital.

She was also a founder member of the Piatti Quartet.

The St Cecilia Orchestra then offers concertgoers a rare treat later with Schmidtt’s Lied & Scherzo for Wind Dectet.

Other favourite works include the Jewel of the Wagner romance his Siegfried Idyll which was never intended for the public and Mozart’s ‘Paris’ Symphony No 31 in D.

St Cecilia Orchestra Conductor Xen Kelsey said: “This concert has everything from a charming curiosity to the ever-popular Mendelssohn Violin Concerto followed by Mozart and Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll.

“Originally it was a serenade written as a Christmas gift by Wagner for his wife Cosima to celebrate the birth of their son Siegfried. I am delighted that someone of Charlotte’s calibre is visiting Ripon again to perform this romantic work.

“The reason why the concerto is so well liked is because it sounds so great.

Tickets available on the door costing £12 (adults) and £10 (concessions).
