Cast of youngsters for famous Dahl book on stage
FOR their annual summer production Harrogate Youth Theatre will perform in the Main Auditorium of Harrogate Theatre following last year's sell-out performance of The Wind in the Willows in the Valley Gardens.
This year’s shows will be a giant, literally, as they present a stage adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic children’s book The BFG.
From Thursday, August 12-Saturday, August 14, a cast of over 25 Youth Theatre members along with professional actor Tom Peters (Abanazar in Harrogate Theatre’s pantomime Aladdin 09/10) will recreate the world of giants, dreams and snozzcumbers which will captivate families of all ages.
Harrogate Youth Theatre (HYT) is one of the largest and most respected youth theatre programmes in the country and offers young people the opportunity to work with theatre professionals across the district. HYT runs weekly groups in Harrogate and Knaresborough and has performed at the National Theatre (as part of the Connections Festival) and most recently the Nidderdale Drama Festival where they won four awards.
Directing the show will be Phil Lowe, who has also directed the previous three pantomimes at Harrogate Theatre. Phil has also directed The Dumb Waiter and Talking Heads at Harrogate Theatre.
Phil will be reunited with professional actor Tom Peters who will be well known to pantomime audiences as the dastardly Abanazar in last year’s Aladdin but returns to play the more good natured role of the BFG.
When orphan Sophie is snatched from her bed by a giant, she fears that he's going to eat her. But although he carries her far away to Giant Country, the giant has no intention of harming her.
The BFG tells Sophie how he mixes up dreams to blow through a trumpet into the rooms of sleeping children. But soon, all the BFG's powers are put to the test as he and Sophie battle to stop the other giants from tucking into the children of the world. The RAF and even the Queen become involved in the mission.
An undisputed national treasure and the world’s favourite children’s author, Roald Dahl has enchanted young minds for over twenty five years with stories that fire the imagination. First published in 1982
The BFG has won countless awards including The Federation of Children's Book Groups Awards, International Board on Books for Young People awards and the Good Book Guide "Best Books of the Past 20 Years”.
David Wood OBE, who has adapted the book for the stage, is the UK’s leading writer and director of children's theatre. His many successes include The Tiger Who Came To Tea, Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Gingerbread Man, The Witches and Babe The Sheep Pig.
