Bumper bonfire weekend planned
Remember remember the fifth of November, it won’t be easy to forget this year with a weekend jam packed with events planned.
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue service said: “We want people to enjoy this year’s Bonfire Night celebrations safely, and would urge people to go along to an organised event, where the fireworks are handled by professionals.”
Residents will be spoilt for choice with the number of organised displays this year.
The Harrogate and District Round Table are hosting the bonfire on The Stray for the 41st year running. Event organiser Alan Fisher said “The Stray bonfire is one of the highlights on the Harrogate calendar and it promises to be a fantastic event once again. The firework display is always breath taking and enjoyed by the community.”
The bonfire will be held at Oatlands Stray, opposite St Aiden’s School and will be lit at 6.15 with fireworks at at 7:15. Entry is free however 100 per cent of any money raised will go to St Micheals Hospice.
Events planned for Friday include a firework display at Aspin Park Primary School in Knaresborough, £3 for adults, £2 for children, 1st Collingham Scout Group’s bonfire and fireworks at the scout hut, £5 per family, Thorner Victory Hall’s bonfire and firework display, £7 for adults and £4 for children, and White Rose Football Club’s bonfire and fireworks event at Sherburn in Elmet, admission free.
On Saturday Thirsk Rotary, Primrose Lane School and the Upper Nidderdale Scout Group will host bonfire’s and firework display’s.
And on Bonfire night itself, Monday, November 5 Knaresborough Cricket Club will host their annual firework display with gates open at 6pm, £2 for adults, £1 for concessions and Grewelthorpe Sports and Social Association will light a bonfire and fireworks in Lofty’s field. no charge but donations welcome.
Scotton, Darley, Tockwith and Long Marston will have bonfire’s and firework displays to enjoy on Monday.
Primrose Lane School in Boston Spa will host their annual bonfire and fireworks event with fairground rides and a Guy Fawkes competition on Staurday, November 10.
Harrogate’s Safer Neighbourhood Commander, Supt Aubrey Smith, is urging people to be careful with fireworks. “They are there to be enjoyed by the vast majority of people and not used as a tool for anti-social behaviour.
“We will deal with those who choose to ignore the legislation and use them the wrong way.”
Supt Smith said extra police patrols are to be put on in the run up to Mischief Night this Sunday, and is urging parents to take responsibility for knowing where their children are. “It’s important to remind young people to be safe and considerate, to ensure that they are not causing the vulnerable or elderly any concern.”
