Why we should listen to our Civic Society
From: J R Cullen, Crossways Drive, Harrogate.
I WAS disgusted to read in the Knaresborough Post of Knaresborough Town Council’s recommendation to Harrogate Borough Council for approval of the application to demolish the Victorian Terrace at the junction of Boroughbridge Road/High Street.
This was despite the Civic Society’s views, which surely must be shared by anyone proud to be a Knaresborian, that preservation and conservation of this completely intact and last remaining example in Knaresborough, were the only way forward.
This terrace is such a part of Knaresborough’s heritage that it must be saved in its entirety, particularly being located in such a prominent and sensitive location. Demolition could only have a severely detrimental impact on the conservation area which, by its very name, should mean buildings being restored and renovated and conserved, not bulldozed to the ground.
Surely, if visitors and residents want to be greeted on coming to the town by an inferior pastiche of modern town houses (for make no mistake this is what is proposed) then it would be more appropriate to visit the Jennyfield estate in Harrogate rather than a town steeped in character and history and certain people, who should be safeguarding the town’s heritage, seem intent on destroying, for reasons known only to themselves.
