POLL: Would you travel more if rail fares were cheaper?

Harrogate commuters board a train to Leeds

The cost of travelling by train to and from Harrogate rose this week, with the average cost of a journey on the Northern Rail network increasing by 4.8 per cent.

Commuters will notice the hike, as the cost of buying a weekly ticket to both Leeds and York from Harrogate has increased.

A peak day return ticket to Leeds from Harrogate has increased by 4.7 per cent, from £8.60 to £9.00, while a seven-day season ticket on the route now costs £37.20, a 4.2 increase on the previous cost of £35.70.

Those travelling to York can expect a 40p increase on a peak day return ticket from Harrogate, which now costs £9.60, an increase of 4.3 per cent. A one-week season ticket has increased to £38.40 from £36.80.

Nationally, season tickets have risen by an average of 4.2 per cent.

The government announced the increases in August, and the new ticket prices came into effect on Wednesday, January 2. Fares have risen annually since 2004.

Northern Rail says the increases will be invested in improvements to stations, trains and services.

Tell us what you think, could these latest rises put you off travelling by train, or does the ease and cost of travelling by rail still make it an efficient way to travel?
