New fire station planned for ‘Dale
Nidderdale is in line for a new fire station after Harrogate Borough Council granted planning permission for a building in Summerbridge.
The new station is set to be built on a plot at the western edge of Summerbridge, next door to Brook’s builders merchants.
Simon Garnett-Spence, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue’s Head of Technical Services, said they are hoping to start construction on the site before Christmas, and to be operational from the site by mid to late 2013.
The construction contract will be put out to tender “in the next couple week.”
The plans are for a “single bay” station accommodating one fire engine, with associated office space, to replace the current Summerbridge fire station which is “old and small” he added.
“The service has been looking for a new site for a number of years but there aren’t a lot of sites available in the area and many have been earmarked for residential use, or have too much of a slope.” Mr Garnett- Spence said.
There are nine retained firefighters based in Summerbridge, and the fire service is recruiting retained firefighters for the station.
