Friends like these deserve praise
From: District Coun Anne Jones, Knaresborough Scriven Park Ward.
IN MY capacity as the Scriven Park ward councillor, I regularly attend the Friends of Jacob Smith Park meetings.
May I, via your pages, applaud the members of the committee and the Friends group as a whole for their interest, concern and commitment to the parkland. These 30 acres were a generous bequest by the late Miss Winifred Jacob Smith.
To harness the goodwill and ‘head of steam’ that is evident , relies on the actions of Harrogate Borough Council. Two public consultations have been carried out, albeit protracted in their conclusion.
The Friends deserve a positive commitment from the Council in order to meet their aspirations. I will be doing everything I can to support the group and to help realise the potential for this area.
The Member Budget scheme was suspended at District level some years ago but monies are available from NYCC representatives and one county councillor has offered to allocate a small amount to the cause.
The Rotary Club of Knaresborough have generously offered to sponsor new trees, this would mark the belated centenary celebrations for the organisation.
The town is blessed with individuals, groups and organisations willing to work in partnership with the Council and this is yet another fine example of local people taking a step forward in order to make a difference.
There is a wealth of experience and expertise within the ‘Friends’ group, I trust that Harrogate Council will give them all the support and commitment necessary to realise their aspirations.
