Financial inequality should be eradicated
From: Tim Simpson, Aspin Park Avenue, Knaresborough
WELL spoken, District Councillor Keith Rothwell, in his letter to the Post on October 23: "Additional tax burden unfair on those living in parishes".
He raised the issue of council tax payers in parishes having to pay a "parish precept" for which Harrogate residents are excused.
I totally agree with the concept of the parish council dealing with issues unique to their own location.
This results in a need to raise taxes to pay for its operation, affecting all such areas throughout the borough council.
However, local issues for the Harrogate residents are covered in the global District activities and are therefore subsidised by the parish residents.
So, I hope that Coun Rothwell will be able to amass support from the ranks of those district councillors who represent parishes, for the eradication of this inequality before the financial requirements for the next year are set.
