As one door closes, another opens at High Street shop

From: Tanya Umpleby, Cooking Fantastic, High Street, Knaresborough.

THE White Rooms cafe closed last Saturday.

My mum, Jackie has run the cafe for five years but had an operation in May and will find the cafe too much.

It simply doesn't make enough money to pay a wage for her role and we don't feel we can put our prices up anymore. We are also not prepared to lower our standards by buying in cheaper meat or ready-prepared cakes.

The purpose of opening the cafe in the first place was to attract customers through the shop which would build up the reputation of the shop and we feel that we have achieved that and built very good relationships with the Knaresborough people.

We have decided to try running the shop as one business – 'Cooking Fantastic' and will have offers and products displayed upstairs.

We have already relented to the pleading of some of our lovely, regular customers and decided to keep a couple of chairs in the window place upstairs where we’ll be serving teas and coffees and no doubt some of Jackie’s famous cakes! But it will only be the one table and when it’s gone its gone!

We have two years left on our lease and we need to know that the shop can survive on its own, otherwise we will not be taking on another lease.

Therefore, we urge everyone to support their local shops as much as possible and in return we will give them good old fashioned honest, friendly advice, service and value.
